Purely Polished & WeWork Pyrmont have joined hands to support ygap’s Polished Man campaign October 2018, to help end violence against children.

What is the Polished Man campaign about?

Statistics show that one in five children are subjected to child abuse. Men drive over 90% sexual abuse toward children. Polished Man encourages men (and women) to form solidarity in trying to put a stop to this. The campaign aims to raise funds to help end violence against children globally. In the words of Mandy Velez, “The movement is called Polished Man and it encourages men to paint one of their fingernails for a week to represent the 1 in 5 children who will be the victims of sexual violence in their lifetime.” (Quoted from: http://bit.ly/2y0Go6C

What is the driving force behind the Polished Man campaign and why nail polish?

Child abuse is a crime that defies all boundaries of tolerance. It all started in 2014, in Melbourne, Australia, when men sported blue nail polish on one nail for a very good cause—make an effort to end violence against children. Now, Polished Man is a global movement. In 2017, people from over 100 countries around the world signed up for the campaign. In 2018, it’s all ready to start this October.

Quoted from https://polishedman.com/about : “ygap's cofounder Elliot Costello came up with the idea for Polished Man after a visit to campaign beneficiary Hagar International in Cambodia. One evening, he met a young girl named Thea, who after playing naughts and crosses for hours, drew a heart on Elliot's palm, and then painted all of his nails blue. Later, Elliot learnt how Thea came to be in Hagar's care - she was physically and sexually assaulted on a daily basis for two years by her orphanage's director. Elliot made the decision then and there to paint one nail to remember Thea. When he later learned of the extent of child violence, the Polished Man movement was born.

Where do the funds go?

All the funds raised through Polished Man are directed to:

  • Trauma prevention and trauma recovery programs for children who are at risk of or have suffered violence across the world;

  • ygap’s accelerator programs supporting people who are running ventures aimed at ending child abuse and

  • Some of the best trauma recovery agencies in the world including the Australian Childhood Foundation, SAMSN, Hagar Australia and the New York Center for Children.
